WATER IS GOOD FOR YOU...IF IT'S GOOD WATER
|
 |
Few desires are so fierce as the thirst for water- Water comprises 60% of
our body weight and is so fundamental to our lives, most people can’t live
without water for more than a week.
But across the continent many people can be ingesting any number of
different contaminants. |
 |
TOXIC LEAD
In North America, for instance, drinking water
supplied to 30 million people in 819 cities contains lead levels above the
recommended maximum, according to a recent survey by the US. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA). |
 |
COLORLESS CHLORINE
Chlorine can react with organic material in water —
such as decaying leaves — to produce chemical compounds called
trihalomethanes (THMs). One of these THMs —chloroform — is associated with
an increased risk of cancer. |
 |
PARASITES
Parasites invisible to the naked eye have been known
to get into drinking water. Two of them, cryptosporidium oocysts and
Giardia lamblia, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and other flu-like
symptoms. |
OTHER
CONTAMINANTS
Chemicals, agricultural pesticides and fertilizers, and
radon, a radioactive gas, have also been known to get into drinking water.
Note: These contaminants are not necessarily in your water.
